John Mercury is Executive Chair & Chair of the Board of Bennett Jones and one of Canada’s leading M&A and private equity lawyers. As Firm Chair, John is responsible for the direction, management, and financial performance of the firm, with a focus on strategy, market and industry initiatives, and client relationships. 

In his practice, John brings more than 25 years of experience advising on complex domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, private equity, and capital markets transactions. He joined Bennett Jones after spending nearly a decade in New York, with a leading U.S. law firm and a global investment bank. He previously held several senior management roles at the firm, including as Vice Chair, Clients and Industries, Head of Private Equity, and Lead Director of the firm’s Board of Directors.

John serves on several not-for-profit boards, including the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation and Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School. He is a member of the Ontario, Alberta and New York State Bar Associations and an alumnus of Yale University, Northwestern University, and the University of Toronto.
